The U-Boat Steel adopted by Jin is a special steel developed by ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems, a German submarine manufacturer, for the hulls of the German Navy’s Class 212 non-nuclear submarines.Not only does it offer excellent resistance to seawater, but it is also non-magnetic—meaning it does not retain residual magnetism—and highly resistant to cracking. Furthermore, the watch comes standard with a case treated with Tegiment® processing, which achieves a Vickers hardness of 1,500 — exceeding that of ceramic (Note 1) —and a rotating bezel featuring a special locking mechanism that prevents it from coming loose even under strong impact (Note 2).Even the black-colored cases are finished with U-Boat Steel (PVD coating + Tegiment treatment), and all models have proven scratch resistance, making them diver’s watches you can rely on. Furthermore, (※3) the ship classification and certification body DNV (formerly Germanischer Lloyd) , ensuring they have received official endorsement from an independent third-party organization.

( ※1) Scratch resistance boasting hardness equal to or greater than that of ceramics — Tegiment / Black Hard Coating
Tegiment is a technology that involves applying a nitrogen-based carburizing process to watch cases to diffuse and infuse carbon molecules into the surface of the steel, which is then hardened through quenching. Since this technology does not use any coatings—but instead hardens the material itself—its scratch resistance far exceeds that of the base material.
This technology was first introduced in 2003 at the International Watch and Jewelry Fair in Basel. Initially, Tegiment technology was used exclusively on stainless steel cases, but it is now also applied to titanium and is compatible with all types of case finishes, including matte and polished.
Black Hard Coating
At Jin, we refer to PVD coatings based on Tegiment as “Black Hard Coatings.” Currently, we always combine Tegiment technology with our black PVD finishes.With Black Hard Coating, the hardness of the Tegiment layer exhibits a continuous gradient. In other words, the surface has high hardness, which gradually transitions to the base material’s inherent hardness. This property makes it possible to apply the PVD coating without causing the colored layer to peel away from the case body.

The rotating bezel with a special mounting mechanism is not the standard press-fit type; instead, it is set into the case using a special technique unique to Zin, ensuring it will never come loose.
While it is securely attached, it is designed to be easily disassembled for repairs.
( ※3) DNV certifies Gin's diver's watches
DNV (formerly DNV GL / Germanischer Lloyd), a classification society, tests and certifies the Frankfurt-based brand Zin’s diver’s watches in accordance with various standards. One testing process focuses on water resistance and pressure resistance, while another involves certification in accordance with European standards for diving equipment—a first in the watch industry.
One of the reasons certification was introduced is the fact that, in any dive, time plays a critical role that can mean the difference between life and death. For this reason, divers’ watches must be exceptionally water-resistant, reliable, and rugged. They must also offer perfect readability in all conditions created by the interplay of light and water.Another reason is that, for Zin, certification testing is a standard process and a means of ensuring quality. Through this certification, Zin’s data regarding its diver’s watches is validated not only on paper but also in practice.
Shop Owner’s Comment: I’ve been a fan of the EZM7.M for over 10 years now.This model—which has since been discontinued—was originally developed for firefighters. It is a 200-meter water-resistant watch featuring Zin Technology’s Tegiment coating, a rotating bezel with a special locking mechanism, Ar Dry Technology, and anti-magnetic protection rated at 80,000 A/m. It remains scratch-free to this day and keeps perfect time; I even use it as a demonstration watch in the store to show customers that it won’t get scratched.
